How does an organization
qualify for a grant?
Most grants made by the
foundation are to charitable organizations with tax-exempt
status under Section 501(c)(3) of IRS code.
Governmental entities and projects of certain other tax-exempt
entities may also be eligible if the projects are charitable,
as defined by the IRS. That allows grants to public entities,
including school districts, and for education, festivals,
public art, historical preservation and more.
Generally, no grants are made to individuals. However, scholarship
funds and emergency aid funds may be set up to benefit a
given class of people. A committee would make the selection
of the individual grant recipients, in accordance with IRS
regulations.

How would my organization
apply for a grant?
Simply call the Newton Community
& Healthcare Foundation office at (316) 804-6007 or 804-6006,
and request information on criteria and deadlines.
The foundation's grants from unrestricted sources are generally
approved annually at the discretion of the Board of Trustees.
Grants from donor-advised funds are distributed after considering
recommendations from the donor advisors.
Certain grant programs, such as the Women's Community Fund
and Peabody Community Fund, have separate grant criteria,
application forms and deadlines. Click
here to download the application form for the Women's Community
Fund.
Grants to designated organizations from endowment income
are made annually. No application is required. Organizations
may notify the foundation to retain the income and reinvest
it for continued growth of the endowment.

Who
decides which organizations receive grants?
The executive committee of
the foundation serves as the grants committee, and makes
the final determination of grant recipients from both its
unrestricted funds and donor-advised funds.
The committee may review the organization's goals, programs,
effectiveness and management before making decisions on
grant recipients. The committee also considers the changing
needs of the community.
