Peabody Community Fund

Purpose:

The Peabody Community Fund (PCF) was developed in August, 2000, to enhance all areas of life in Peabody - education, the environment, health care, civic activities and human services.

Long-term investment of capital by individuals, organizations and corporations is helping ensure a rich, vibrant community for future generations. It enables the community to respond to today's challenges, and be flexible in meeting change in the future.

Structure:

The PCF has been established as an affiliate of the Newton Community & Healthcare Foundation (NCHF) to help offset the high costs of establishing and maintaining a foundation, and to ensure professional management of contributions. Such affiliation allows all contributions to the Peabody Community Fund to be tax-deductible.

Procedure:

Applications for grants from the Peabody Community Foundation are submitted by organizations for review by the NCHF board of directors.

Grants:

2004

  • $300 to the Peabody Historical Society to install lights from the old high school at the north entrance to the library

2001

  • $400 to the Peabody Historical Society for a five-foot limestone sign in the Santa Fe Park

This grant is the first made by the Peabody Community Fund.

How to give:

The PCF simplifies charitable giving. One contribution may address a number of needs and benefit several community organizations.

Gifts may be cash, real estate or stocks, and may be set up through long-term trusts within estate plans. As a public charity, NCHF can provide substantial tax advantages for individuals and corporations contributing to the Peabody Community Fund.

Any amount, no matter how small, may be contributed. A minimum contribution of $2,000 is required for establishing a named fund.

Ways to give:

  • Unrestricted Gift
An unrestricted gift allows the board of directors the most flexibility in responding to the emerging problems and needs in the community.

  • Designated Gift
Donors may designate one or more specific organizations. These designations will be honored as long as the recipient organization delivers the services that the donor wished to support. Should the organization cease operation, programs with similar goals will be identified so that the charitable intent of the donor is fulfilled.

  • Donor-Advised Gift
These funds allow the donor to suggest use of the gift without the administrative responsibilities present in a private foundation. Though IRS regulations require that Newton Community & Healthcare Foundation have ultimate control of the fund, the PCF board accepts the donors' recommendations to support valid charities and public charitable projects.

  • Organization Endowment Funds
Not-for-profit organizations may establish their own endowment funds.

  • Scholarship Fund
Scholarships are provided for deserving students. Donors can designate scholar fields of interest while making use of the foundation's tax benefits and pooled investing.

  • Field of Interest
A donor can establish a fund designed to benefit certain areas or charitable endeavors, such as the arts, preservation, social service, education, etc.

We'd be happy to provide more information or a brochure on the foundation.
