Peabody
Awards First Grant
Rock solid is the
best way to describe the first project funded by the Peabody
Community Fund (PCF), an affiliate of Newton Community &
Healthcare Foundation.
A 5'x 1' limestone sign
was commissioned and erected by the Peabody Historical Society
for the town's Santa Fe Park with a $400 grant from the
PCF.
The grant was presented
to the historical society in May. "The community fund
has had a very slow first year," said N.M. Patton,
chairman of the PCF.
"So we were especially
pleased to be able to provide this first grant to the historical
society."
The society was one of four
applicants to apply for a grant in 2001. "As a new
community fund, we are struggling to get people to understand
what the fund is and how it works, so they know the benefit
of their contributions," Patton added.
The Peabody Community Fund
was developed last August. The PCF simplifies charitable
giving. One contribution may address a number of needs and
benefit several community organizations.
Through the long-term investment
of capital contributed by individuals, organizations or
corporations, the foundation will enhance all areas of life,
including education, environment, health care, civic activities
and human services.
The PCF was established
as an affiliate of the Newton Community and Healthcare Foundation
to help offset the high costs of establishing and maintaining
a foundation. The affiliation also ensures professional
management of the monies donated to the community.
The PCF board has set a
$2,000 minimum for establishing named funds. However, no
gift is too small to make to an existing named fund or to
one or more of the foundations general funds as a
memorial, scholarship or outright gift.
Gifts may be cash, real
estate or stocks, and may be set up through long-term trusts
within estate plans. As a public charity, the foundation
can provide substantial tax advantages for individuals and
corporations.
