Running
& Rolling for Education
Some walked...some
ran...some pulled wagons chock-full of kids. But regardless
of their mode of locomotion, nearly 125 participants helped
raise $1,400 for the Run, Walk and Roll for Education fund-raiser
sponsored by the USD 373 Education Endowment.
The late September event
at the Athletic Park in Newton was designed to raise funds
and community awareness for the endowment. "A beautiful
fall afternoon produced a great setting for the NCHF
USD 373 Education Endowment Walk, Run and Roll for Education,"
said John Morton, Superintendent, USD 373. "I was pleased
with both the enthusiasm and support that the participants
demonstrated. It is yet another indication of the level
of support our schools enjoy in the Newton community."
The Newton High School jazz
band, under the direction of Keith Woolery, entertained
the group prior to the event. Tracy Strain of the Newton
Wellness Center led the group in aerobic stretches and warm-ups.
McDonalds restaurants, Coca-Cola and Newton Medical Center
provided drinks, bottled water and cookies, respectively.
Drawings were held for prizes
provided by local merchants, including $200 in gift certificates
from the Newton Factory Outlet Mall, season passes to Newton
High School athletic events, retired Beany Babies from Designs
by John's, subscriptions to the Newton Kansan, and others.
The USD 373 Education Endowment
Fund is a permanent endowment fund of Newton Community &
Healthcare Foundation, designated to benefit USD 373.
The endowment was established
two years ago to provide students and staff of the Newton
public schools with academic programs, enrichment activities
and professional opportunities not otherwise affordable
within the budget constraints of the Newton school district.
