Women's
Community Fund Announces Grants
Members of the newly-developed Women's Community Fund (WCF)
have
announced the recipients of their first grant distribution.
The fund, with 21 contributors donating $500 each, gave
a total of
$10,500
to the following area organizations:
Health Ministries Clinic of Harvey County, $5,000
THUMBC Respite Care, $2,500
Harvey County Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Task Force,
Inc.,
$3,000
The WCF operates as a component donor-advised fund of Newton
Community & Healthcare Foundation (NCHF).
The Grants Committee of the WCF made grant recommendations
to the
Newton Community & Healthcare Foundation board, which
gave final
approval on the grants.
The WCF's mission is to provide an avenue for area women
to engage in
philanthropy, creating a fund for projects which will benefit
citizens
in the Newton area.
"We're feeling very good about our first year,"
said Nancy Craig, WCF
executive board member. "We hope to double our membership
next year, and
accomplish even more for our community.
"We had seven grant applications this year, and we
had a hard time
choosing...all applicants were deserving of grants,"
she added.
Any woman is welcome to support the WCF. A year's commitment
to the
fund is $500 and includes:
- An opportunity to vote at the annual meeting or by mail
- An opportunity to serve on the Grants Committee
The partnership with NCHF allows all fund donations to be
tax-deductible.
Each year a rotating Grants Committee presents the membership
with a list of possible grant recipients, developed from member
suggestions and grant applications.
The following guidelines have been established for grant
requests:
- Urgency or immediacy to address a critical need
- Excitement because it is a bold new venture
- Creativity in providing new solutions to timeworn problems
