Kids FUNd Awards 12 Grants

A dozen area children's charitable organizations today received grants totaling $13,000 from the Newton Kids FUNd, a new fund created from proceeds of the 2004 Great Newton Derby Duck Race, a project of the Newton Community & Healthcare Foundation.

Tom Adrian, chairman of the Foundation board of trustees, presided over the presentation ceremonies in the main lobby of the Newton Medical Center.

The children's organizations receiving grants are:

  • CASA, $650, to recruit and train volunteers to help abused and neglected kids navigate the court system.
  • Cottonwood Scout Camp, $1,600, to install water line and electrical supply to cabins and gates to secure the property.
  • Cub Scout Pack #111, $100, to send boys to day camp at $25 per scout.
  • FUNdamental Learning Center, $1,400, to provide a scholarship to train a language therapist to teach children in Harvey County who have reading difficulties.
  • Harvey County Special Education Cooperative Early Education Center, $1,000, to provide monthly screenings for developmental indicators and infant scales to monitor weight gains/losses.
  • Health Ministries Clinic, Inc., $2,000, to provide basic dental and medical care for children.
  • Heart to Heart, $1,600, to defray costs of training professionals investigating child abuse.
  • Hesston Community Child Care Center, $1,500, to purchase two computers with software for learning and fun.
  • Kiwanis Club of Newton, $150, for child safety seats, checks for correct installation and identification stickers.
  • Kiwanis Club of Newton, $500, for the “Bring Up Grades” (BUG) incentives for underachieving third through fifth grade students.
  • Northridge Elementary Interrelated Special Ed, $2,000, to purchase laptops so students can learn to use computers for study.
  • Prairie View, $500, for “Star Store” behavior rewards for learned behavior.

A seven-member committee, including representatives from the five 2004 Duck Race "Top Duck" sponsors, reviewed more than 30 grant applications totaling more than $42,000 to select the 12 successful organizations. Committee members include Tom Adrian, chair, Adrian & Pankrantz; Mike Barron, 2005 Duck Race chair, Edward Jones; Nancy Craig, Axtell Orthopedics; Chad Frey, The Newton Kansan; Paul Suderman, Midland National Bank, Mary Miller, Pizza Hut, and Agnes Itote, Newton Medical Center.

The 2005 Great Newton Derby Duck Race will be Saturday, September 24, 2005, on Sand Creek in Newton between the Fifth Street and First Street Bridges.
